Silicone sponge gaskets
Custom-cut silicone sponge gaskets (VMQ, closed-cell): where it works, where it fails, typical properties, and how to call it out on a drawing. Use the builder to spec your part in this material.
Typical properties
| Polymer | VMQ, closed-cell |
|---|---|
| Form | sponge |
| Service temperature | -75 to 400 °F |
| Firmness | Soft / Medium / Firm (by compression-deflection) |
| Common thicknesses (in) | .031, .062, .093, .125, .187, .250, .375, .500 |
Typical ranges for the material family. Specific grades differ: confirm on the datasheet.
Strengths
- Very wide temperature range
- Low compression set (good long-term sealing)
- Weather, UV and ozone resistance
- Low closure force: seals uneven or thin enclosures
Watch out for
- Poor tear and abrasion resistance
- Not for petroleum oils and fuels
- Higher cost than EPDM or neoprene sponge
Typical applications
- Electrical and lighting enclosures
- HVAC and appliance doors
- EV battery covers
- Outdoor electronics
Specs and standards to reference
- ASTM D1056 (cellular rubber)
- UL 94 / UL 157 grades exist
- FDA-compliant grades exist
